North Point Distillery, founded in 2020 by Struan Mackie and Alex MacDonald, has grown into an exciting sustainable Rum Distillery on the far northern coast of Scotland. Situated just outside the town of Thurso, on a historic former U.S Navy Listening Site.

Since its founding, the distillery has created two core range rums: North Point Pilot Rum and North Point Spiced Rum. The North Point Pilot has moved from sugarcane and molasses-based Rum to straight molasses, which is produced via a long-form 7-day fermentation process with a blend of yeast varieties, then matured and aged in Highland Scotch Whisky casks.

North Point Spiced Rum, without any syrups or concentrates, is a powerful rum influenced by the distillery’s love for Terry’s Chocolate Orange. It is spicy and complex, with a long dark chocolate note.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the North Point Distillery From electrically-fired stills powered by wind to completely recycled-and-recyclable or compostable packaging to locally-sourced ingredients, their efforts are great and have been recognised time and time again, winning sustainability awards from The Gin Guide, The Icons of Rum, The Great British Food Awards, and The Highland Business Awards.

All four stills are bespoke, copper-pot stills, outfitted with the option to switch from electricity to steam generation.

The distillery has also been recognised by the World Rum Awards, Great British Food Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, among others. Recently, the distillery was awarded the Craft Producer of the Year and Most Sustainable Distillery by the Icons of Rum, hosted by the World Rum Awards.

2023 was a year of note as North Point Distillery was voted Craft Rum Distillery of the Year at the Icons of Rum awards, and the team expanded the distillery’s Rum production capacity alongside formally launching their Scotch Whisky.

The North Point team are delighted to announce their participation at the Scottish Rum Festival 2024, where they will showcase a selection of older cask-aged rums that they have been meticulously experimenting with. This includes exceptional rums from Caroni, Foursquare and Hampden distilleries. Additionally, the team will be offering the first tastings of their own 3-year-old rum, which has just reached maturation.
