Base Spirits Collective will be showcasing two exciting rums at The Scottish Rum Festival 2023.

The first is SeaWolf, the creators of Scotland’s first white rum. The second is Rum Union, Holyrood Distillery’s high quality rum made from a blend of ingredients taken from non-traditional rum making nations.

SeaWolf

Created by Mike Aikman and Jason Scott, the duo behind award winning Edinburgh bars such as Bramble and Lucky Liquor, SeaWolf was the first white rum to be produced on Scottish soil.

The name SeaWolf comes from the Native American term for killer whales, a nod to Britain's naval links with rum importation and also to the pods of ‘SeaWolf’s’ that can be found around Scotland’s coastline. The diving whales on the bottle are illustrated by Scottish artist Iain McIntosh.

Mike and Jason recognised a need for mixable white spirit, that wasn’t gin. They researched, tested and tasted prototypes for two years to create a spirit that would be high quality, affordable and approachable.

SeaWolf launched on the 1st December 2016, made with a combination of rum and champagne yeasts. The fermentation of the sugarcane molasses is done at low temperatures for four weeks and then distilled in a pot still, this gives SeaWolf its unusual and unique flavour.

When creating their rum Mike and Jason deliberately engineered SeaWolf to make the perfect Daiquiri. With their track record in running bars, they understand the importance of high quality rums in cocktails, and what makes a great spirit. SeaWolf offers notes of unripe banana, sugarcane and cereal alongside a smooth, creamy texture.

Rum Union by Holyrood Distillery

Holyrood Distillery is a single-malt whisky distillery that opened in 2019. Located in Edinburgh’s city centre, it is a popular attraction for many tourists and whisky-lovers, winning Icons of Whisky Attraction of the Year Award in 2021. Unconstrained by category or tradition, this distillery makes far more than whisky.

Rum Union is an extension of Holyrood Distillery’s award winning rum portfolio, Elizabeth Yard. Aiming to challenge traditional makers beliefs and to bring a modern narrative to the rum category, Rum Union was created.

A blend of incredible rums all sourced from non-traditional rum making countries:

  • Philippines - Pot distilled molasses rum, for its body and texture.

  • Ghana - Pot distilled fresh cane juice rums to impart complex esters.

  • Vietnam - Column distilled fresh cane juice rums for their elegant aromas.

It represents a new approach to quality rum blending. These rums have been selected based on their quality, and character, with each component bringing something unique to the blend.

Rum Union has been created as a quality blended rum that brings depth of flavour and complexity to the blended rum category. As such Rum Union contains no added sugar, no spirit caramel and is non chill filtered.
