Meet the Producers: Rumburra Orach - Scottish Discovered Caribbean Rum

The association between pirates and rum dates back to the 1500’s and stretches to the 1800’s. Rumburra’s story owes its discovery to one, wild, Scottish Buccaneer – The 17th Century Privateer was none other than William Kidd.

As the tale goes, Kidd sailed into the Caribbean, pillaging ships in search of silver and gold.

But gold is not all a pirate would hope to find. It is said that Kidd had a secret loot of exotic rums taken from his plunder in Barbados.

A wanted man with a disgruntled crew, Kidd ran short of places to hide. Captured by the English Crown and sentenced to hang for piracy, Kidd’s pillaging came to a deathly end. To this day, Kidd’s treasure has been unaccounted for… Lost at Sea… Lost in fable and to imagination. Until Now.

They say dead men tell no tales but throw a tale to the waves and it can end up anywhere.

Little to Kidd’s knowledge, his secrets were unexpectedly discovered upon the wet shores of Burra.

And this is how a sea weathered recipe telling of rums from exotic lands ended back in Scottish hands.

With its provenance very much in Barbados but bottled in Scotland using premium Scottish water, Rumburra Orach is a blend of column and pot still distillation and is made using fermented molasses.

The ages of the Rums in our blend are carefully selected 3 and 5-year-old, aged in American oak barrels and subject to tropical maturation, this leads to and increased interaction between the wood and the spirit, creating particularly flavoured Rums.

High humidity and temperatures can mean that more water evaporates than alcohol, leaving the spirit with a higher alcoholic strength and a more concentrated flavour.

Orach, a Gaelic derivative for Golden, our first rum, is very much a premium rum, a sipping rum with a slight whisky note which gives Rumburra Orach quite a unique taste, appealing to rum lovers as well as the discerning malt whisky drinker.

Delicious ‘on the rocks’, Rumburra’s versatility is featuring in cocktails in many bars, whether it’s in a Rumburra Old Fashioned, Rumburra Black Storm, Rumburra Russian, a Caribbean Club or one of Dakota’s Rum Swizzles.
