Meet the Producers: Matugga Distillers

Founded by husband and wife team Paul and Jacine Rutasikwa, Matugga Distillers launched the first rum distillery in central Scotland in 2018. The company produces a multi-award-winning range of distinctive artisan rums from scratch through 100% copper pot distillation at its family-owned distillery in Livingston, which are distributed across the UK and the EU.

The company’s portfolio represents a fusion of the founders’ heritage — Paul was born in Uganda and Jacine has proud Jamaican roots, while showcasing Scottish micro-distillery craft. Matugga Distillers produces the full spectrum of rum styles: white rum, flavoured rum, spiced rum and cask-aged golden and dark rums.

Matugga Rum; flagship range of cask-aged smoky golden and masala chai spiced rums positioned at the premium end of the market, helping to establish the company’s reputation for innovation and quality.

Liv Rum; new portfolio of award-winning white rums, spiced rum and flavoured rum liqueur featuring Scottish fruits and botanicals.

The team oversees the entire production process from fermentation and distilling to hand-bottling and the filling of casks, which are stored on-site. Every batch of spirit is meticulously managed by Paul Rutasikwa, Head Distiller with stringent quality control. A rum and whisky connoisseur and a chartered civil engineer by profession, Paul perfected his distilling skills at Heriot-Watt University through its Brewing & Distilling programme.
