Meet the Producer: Brass Neck | 2021

The Brass Neck journey started (as many great ventures do) in a bar one night.

Freddy Drucquer, Dougie Jeffries and Chris Dowdall, friends that met through family and work, sat discussing their favourite rums, their love for the spirit and how a country with Scotland’s rich distilling heritage should have more of a representation in the market. The trio discussed how much they would love to create a distinctive Scottish rum with unique, bold flavours.

There was a very clear vision of what they were about to make. The rum was to be distilled in Scotland and it was to feature some of the finest Scottish botanicals. Working with a top distiller in a Perth distillery (Strathearn Distillery), the team got to work developing a recipe. Starting with a beautiful pot-stilled rum and experimenting with the infusion of hundreds of different botanicals and spices, the journey to perfection had begun.

After many rounds of tasting, (yeah ok, that was a fun part!) some tweaking and fine tuning, the team finally arrived at their final product. The recipe includes some Scottish botanicals such as Scottish nettles and thistles as well as some international botanicals including tonka beans and cacao nibs, rounded off with a nice citrus twist from some aromatic orange peel.

The name of course doesn’t need much introduction. For a spirit that’s not traditionally distilled in Scotland, infused with some ingredients that aren’t typically found in rum. You’d need to have a bit of a ‘Brass Neck’ to do that!

The team acquired the help of a Glasgow tattoo artist to design the bottle. The Brass Neck label features the fox, boldly travelling from his natural habitat to the urban environment, his breaking Brass Neck chain symbolising his freedom to roam where he pleases.

Brass Neck launched December 2020, the premium spiced rum, bottled at 40% ABV can be found in a handful of shops, bars and restaurants around Scotland.
