Meet the Producers | North Point | 2023

North Point Distillery creates small batches of authentic Scottish spirits in the north of Scotland. North Point Distillery sits on the rugged North Coast in Forss, Caithness, just a few miles from Thurso on a historic site which was formerly a U.S. Navy Listening Site – one of three strategic sites that triangulated communications for NATO during the Cold War.

North Point Distillery released its first rum, North Point Pilot Rum, in the autumn of 2020, drawing inspiration from the Caithness lore surrounding the tumultuous Pentland Firth on the distillery’s doorstep.

The founders, Alex MacDonald and Struan Mackie, have ensured that sustainability is a cornerstone of their distillery. From electrically-fired stills powered by wind to completely recycled-and-recyclable or compostable packaging to locally-sourced ingredients, their efforts are great and have been recognised time and time again, winning sustainability awards from The Gin Guide, The Icons of Rum, The Great British Food Awards, and The Highland Business Awards.

The distillery has also been recognised by the World Rum Awards, Great British Food Awards, and the IWSC, among others. Recently, the distillery was awarded the Craft Producer of the Year and Most Sustainable Distillery by the Icons of Rum, run by the World Rum Awards.

North Point Distillery has been an active part of the new wave of rum distilleries distilling from base sugarcane molasses. Using distilling-grade molasses and experimenting with brewer’s, whisky, and wild yeasts, alongside non-temperature controlled fermentation, allows the profile of their rums to come through in the glass.

Alongside the whisky cask-aged Pilot Rum, North Point has a very successful product in their Spiced Rum. Combining 21 botanicals and spices, their chocolate orange-inspired Spiced Rum, uniquely designed by award-winning Head Distiller Greg Benson, is a robust Spiced Rum which has been recognised as a staple in the International award scene and was recently recognised for a second time by the Great Taste Awards.

Looking to the future, the founding team is preparing for the formal launch of their 3-year-old aged rum in 2024. Alongside this launch will be a series of limited, unique cask launches with which the team have experimented – casks such as Oloroso sherry, ruby port, Mizunara, multi-bourbon ageing, Palo Cortado sherry, red wine, and older 1st-fill rare whisky hogsheads.

North Point frequently collaborate with their community in Caithness and the Highlands, and are now looking forward to sharing their story and rum with The Scottish Rum Festival 2023.
